Armenian FM rules out third-party guarantees for agreements with Azerbaijan
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has dismissed the idea that the involvement of a third party, including a major power, is necessary to guarantee compliance with peace agreements and the reopening of communications between Baku and Yerevan.
Mirzoyan noted that the sides have learned from experience that such guarantees do not work. He emphasised Armenia’s preference for agreements based on mutual interest rather than external enforcement, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
He also addressed concerns that the peace treaty might disproportionately favour Azerbaijan. Mirzoyan stressed that the agreements are beneficial to both sides, noting that “what we have received is beneficial to us. What Azerbaijan has received is very important to them. In this case, both sides will be interested in complying with the agreements.”
While dismissing the need for a third-party guarantor, Mirzoyan acknowledged that the involvement of figures such as US President Donald Trump could provide “an added value” to the process.
