Russia, US keep communication channels open on sensitive issues
Russia and the United States are able to exchange signals on sensitive issues through existing channels, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, while also discussing the Putin–Trump call and prospects for further Ukraine talks.
He made the remark in response to a journalist’s question about reports that US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff had asked the Russian side not to pass intelligence information to Iran, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“I can only say that Witkoff is in contact with Russian interlocutors. The communication channel allows both sides to convey signals to each other on the most sensitive issues,” Peskov noted.
Speaking about a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Peskov said the two leaders did not discuss in detail the possible lifting of US sanctions on Russian oil.
“The topic was not discussed in such detail. However, the consequences [of the sanctions] for the global economy are known to both Trump and Putin,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
Russia also considers it necessary to continue negotiations on Ukraine, Peskov added during the briefing.
“The trilateral format must continue. The Americans are ready to continue their mediation efforts. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin gives them high marks. There are no specific dates or locations yet,” the Kremlin representative said when asked about the continuation of the negotiation process.
