Armenian Parliament adopts statement on establishing peace with Azerbaijan
The Armenian Parliament adopted a statement on establishing peace with Azerbaijan in an extraordinary session on October 2, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
The statement, drafted by the Civil Contract faction, was adopted with 64 votes in favour and two abstentions.
The opposition did not take part in the vote, as its members left the chamber at the start of the discussion. The document sets out the main points of the August 8 agreements signed in Washington by the leaders of Armenia, the United States, and Azerbaijan.
The statement declares the parliament’s support for the joint declaration signed by the Armenian prime minister and the Azerbaijani president during their meeting with the U.S. president, and welcomes the initialling of the peace agreement and the establishment of interstate relations with Azerbaijan.
The rationale for the statement notes that it was adopted “to protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of Armenia’s borders, with the understanding of the importance of similar recognition of the borders of neighbouring states and peaceful coexistence for Armenia’s development.”
The parliament also stressed the importance of unblocking communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Lawmakers from the ruling faction underlined that Armenia will cooperate with the United States and agreed third-party participants in implementing the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) project, expressing gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The parliament further called on the public, as well as political and expert circles, as well as cultural communities in Armenia and Azerbaijan, to refrain from discourse and actions that could reignite conflict.
