Azerbaijan, Armenia near historic peace agreement Presidential representative says
Azerbaijan and Armenia are on the verge of finalizing a historic peace agreement, representative of the President of Azerbaijan on special assignments, Elchin Amirbayov said during discussions at the Hudson Institute in the United States.
Amirbayov highlighted the substantial progress made towards ending the long-standing conflict between the two nations, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“We have never been so close to a peace agreement,” Amirbayov stated.
“A historic opportunity has arisen for both countries to close the page of enmity, to change the landscape of the South Caucasus region, and turn it into a region of good-neighbourliness, peace, and stability.”
The peace process, which has spanned nearly 30 years with various mediation efforts, saw a significant shift last December when both countries opted for a direct and bilateral format of negotiation. This change has led to notable advancements, including the establishment of mutual trust, the exchange of diplomatic support, the release of some detainees, and the initiation of practical work on border delimitation.
Amirbayov expressed optimism about the near-finalized peace agreement.
“Looking at the text of the peace agreement lying on the table, one can say that we are very close to finalising the work on it,” he said.
He further emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to meeting international community expectations while addressing the root causes of the conflict, which he attributed to Armenia's territorial claims.
“We hope that the remaining difficulties will be resolved soon and we will achieve a reliable, lasting, and irreversible peace,” Amirbayov concluded.
