Azerbaijan delivers critical aid to Syria amid ongoing humanitarian crisis
Humanitarian aid sent by Azerbaijan to Syria has been successfully distributed in a refugee camp located in the village of Karakopru, in Aleppo province.
The distribution of the aid was reported Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Syria, Caliber.Az reports.
The embassy played an active role in the operation, overseeing the distribution of essential supplies to those in need.
The assistance, part of Azerbaijan’s ongoing humanitarian support to Syria, aims to alleviate the hardships faced by refugees in the region.
Azerbaijan dispatched its first humanitarian aid convoy to Syria, aimed at supporting the population in need on December 30, 2024 , following an order from President Ilham Aliyev.
The convoy, comprising 10 trucks, carried around 200 tons of food supplies.
After more than 13 years of brutal conflict, Syria's humanitarian crisis has reached alarming proportions. Approximately 16.7 million Syrians, or two-thirds of the country’s population, are now reliant on humanitarian aid for survival. Around 13 million people—about half the population—are unable to secure adequate food without external assistance.
The situation has been exacerbated by a series of compounding challenges. A severe economic crisis, skyrocketing food prices, and mass unemployment have only deepened the struggles of the population. Many workers earn just the equivalent of $25 a month, while the cost of basic goods, such as a 600-gram loaf of bread, has soared to nearly one dollar.
Moreover, the destruction of critical infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and water systems, has made access to essential services—such as education, healthcare, and clean water—extremely difficult. The physical and economic scars of the war continue to hinder any efforts to rebuild the country’s foundational services, leaving many without the resources needed to meet basic needs.
For countless families, life remains marked by insecurity and an uncertain future. In many regions, violence and displacement remain entrenched in daily life, further destabilizing an already fractured society. The continued hardship, coupled with a lack of employment and access to necessities, paints a grim picture for Syria’s population as they struggle to cope with the ongoing devastation.
