Azerbaijan pledges continued efforts to promote peace and stability at UN meeting
A selective approach and the application of double standards in matters related to state sovereignty and territorial integrity are unacceptable, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Tofig Musayev, said.
According to local media, Musayev made the remarks during a high-level discussion entitled “UN Charter at 80: Reimagining Prevention and the Resolution of Conflicts,” held at the United Nations headquarters.
Emphasising that the core mission of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security, the diplomat noted that while the organisation has recorded certain successes over the past 80 years, it has also faced serious setbacks.
“Parties that violate international law often use conflict resolution mechanisms to consolidate military gains, prolong impunity, and delay peace by misinterpreting commonly accepted norms and principles. In this regard, it is important to further strengthen cooperation against disinformation and misinterpretations,” Musayev said.
He warned against the misuse of peaceful dispute settlement mechanisms as a means of freezing the outcomes of armed conflicts, stressing that such practices would undermine both the prohibition on the use of force and the right to self-defence.
Musayev also stated that mediation, as an optional mechanism for resolving international disputes, must be grounded in the principles of voluntariness and the consent of the parties involved, and should not obstruct international organisations from fulfilling their mandates.
Highlighting the need for stronger international solidarity with post-conflict countries, the Azerbaijani diplomat underscored that assistance in rebuilding destroyed cities, rehabilitating the environment, and ensuring the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons to their homes is essential for achieving sustainable peace.
In his concluding remarks, Musayev said Azerbaijan will continue its consistent efforts to strengthen peace, security, and stability both in the region and beyond, and reaffirmed the country’s determination to further expand international and regional partnerships and cooperation.
