Azerbaijan's ombudsman urges international action on ethnic cleansing by Armenia
The Commissioner for Human Rights of Azerbaijan (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva has sent an open letter to international human rights organizations and foreign ombudsmen, outlining the policy of ethnic cleansing and deportations carried out by Armenia against the Azerbaijani people on the grounds of racial discrimination and hatred.
İn the letter, Sabina Aliyeva urged international human rights organizations and foreign ombudsmen to take a decisive and just stance on the issue, based on the norms and principles of international law, without double standards, Caliber.Az reports.
She called on the international community to take steps for a fair resolution of this problem.
The Ombudsman emphasized that the expulsion of around 300,000 Azerbaijanis from the territory of present-day Armenia should be recognized at the international level as an unlawful act, and ensuring their right to a dignified and safe return should be a priority for the international community. She stressed that the continued violation of their rights should be viewed as a threat to international peace and security.
In the letter, Sabina Aliyeva also referenced a recently circulated video featuring the former President of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosyan. She called on the international community to take action to investigate the disturbing facts contained in the former president’s statements, which confirm the forced expulsion of Azerbaijani compatriots from Western Azerbaijan.
Sabina Aliyeva also urged the international community to demand that the Armenian government refrain from actions that promote hatred and discrimination against Azerbaijanis on racial, ethnic, and religious grounds, particularly not involving children in such actions, banning literature that propagates hatred towards Azerbaijanis, and is used to shape the thinking of the younger generation.
