"At the First Ministerial Meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group in Rome, we had an exchange of views on the role of nuclear power as a clean, stable, and long-term energy source in the global energy transition and our cooperation with the IAEA. We drew attention to the fact that nuclear power will be in the spotlight in the fight against climate change at COP29," he wrote.
The inaugural WFEG meeting, organized by the IAEA and co-chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, began on November 6. The event focuses on advancing international efforts to develop fusion energy and promote a collaborative, global approach.
At the meeting, the IAEA is set to unveil two important publications: Fusion Key Elements and the World Fusion Outlook 2024. The WFEG aims to drive global cooperation in fusion energy development by enhancing partnerships between industry, government, academia, and the public. The group also aims to optimize R&D, address engineering challenges, establish regulatory frameworks, promote public engagement, and integrate fusion energy into existing systems.
This gathering marks a critical moment for the future of fusion energy, and the IAEA plans to organize future WFEG meetings to track progress, ensure political engagement, and encourage collective action in this field.
