Azerbaijani officials discuss peace with Armenia, cultural representation, global initiatives

22 October 2024 13:10

In a plenary session of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Deputy Chairman Ziyafat Asgarov emphasized that the country seeks a peace treaty not with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, but with the state of Armenia itself.

He highlighted ongoing legal challenges, noting that Armenia continues to use the term “Nagorno-Karabakh” in lawsuits against Azerbaijan, which complicates the prospect of signing a peace agreement, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“How can a peace agreement be signed in this context? I want to reiterate that it is the Armenian constitution that hinders the signing of a peace treaty with Azerbaijan.”

Ziyafat Asgarov further noted that both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence of Armenia state that “Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Armenia.”

Asgarov stressed that until references to “Nagorno-Karabakh” are removed from Armenian legal documents, a peace accord remains unattainable.

Transitioning to cultural representation, MP Fazil Mustafa raised concerns about the removal of pages related to Azerbaijani martyrs from Wikipedia.

He urged the need for proactive measures to ensure that Azerbaijani narratives are accurately represented on the platform, calling for increased volunteer involvement and enhanced knowledge sharing among contributors.

Mustafa argued that improving the quality of articles is essential to counteract biases, particularly from Armenian editors.

Further discussing Azerbaijan’s role on the international stage, Professor Tahira Allahyarova, Deputy Chairperson of the Center for Social Research, addressed the significance of the upcoming COP29 conference in Azerbaijan.

At a roundtable organized with the ANAS Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, she remarked on the establishment of a climate finance fund as a crucial initiative.

Allahyarova also pointed out that international Armenian communities, supported by countries like France, are attempting to undermine Azerbaijan's achievements, including through the dissemination of negative narratives.
