Azerbaijani presidential aide visits new Azerbaijani embassy building in Tehran PHOTO

02 February 2025 08:48

Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, visited the newly opened administrative building of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran.

During his visit, Hajiyev laid flowers at the bust of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, paying tribute to the pivotal figure in Azerbaijan’s history, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran.

Hajiyev’s visit comes as part of a broader diplomatic mission to Iran, where he held crucial talks with Iranian Presidential Advisor Mehdi Sanaei. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding economic cooperation between the two nations.

To recap, the embassy had suspended its activities following a tragic terrorist attack on January 27, 2023. A gunman attacked the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Tehran, breaching the embassy’s security post and killing the head of the security service, an Azerbaijani officer, with an AK-47 rifle. Two other security officers were injured in the attack. While Iran cited personal motives behind the attack, Azerbaijan condemned it as a terrorist act.

Following extensive negotiations between the authorities in Baku and Tehran, the embassy resumed operations in July 2024 at its new address, signaling a new chapter in Azerbaijan-Iran relations.
