Hajiyev’s visit comes as part of a broader diplomatic mission to Iran, where he held crucial talks with Iranian Presidential Advisor Mehdi Sanaei. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and expanding economic cooperation between the two nations.
To recap, the embassy had suspended its activities following a tragic terrorist attack on January 27, 2023. A gunman attacked the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Tehran, breaching the embassy’s security post and killing the head of the security service, an Azerbaijani officer, with an AK-47 rifle. Two other security officers were injured in the attack. While Iran cited personal motives behind the attack, Azerbaijan condemned it as a terrorist act.
Following extensive negotiations between the authorities in Baku and Tehran, the embassy resumed operations in July 2024 at its new address, signaling a new chapter in Azerbaijan-Iran relations.
