Azerbaijani speaker attends opening ceremony of COP30 Leaders’ Summit PHOTO
Chair of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, who is on a working visit to Belém, Brazil, is taking part in the Leaders’ Summit of the 30th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30).
Azerbaijan’s parliamentary speaker was welcomed in the Blue Zone by Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira before the opening ceremony of the COP30 Leaders’ Summit took place, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Speeches were delivered by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as presidents and prime ministers of several countries.
COP30 brings together heads of state and government, ministers from various countries, and leaders of international organisations to discuss pressing issues and commitments related to climate change.
At COP30, countries are expected to unveil updated national climate plans, or nationally determined contributions (NDCs), setting out their emissions targets and proposed actions.
However, fewer than half have submitted revised NDCs so far, and many of the existing plans remain insufficient to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement.
According to UNEP, current NDC trajectories would lead to a 2.5°C rise in global temperatures — potentially reaching 2.8°C — while delivering only a 10% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035.
Climate Analytics, in turn, warns that keeping warming to 1.7°C requires global emissions to fall by 20% by 2030 and then decline by 11% annually throughout the 2030s, with methane emissions also needing to drop by 30% by 2035.
