03 September 2024 20:40

Baku served as the venue for the High-Level Dialogue on Advancing Climate Transparency through Universal Participation in the Enhanced Transparency Framework, as part of Azerbaijan's role as the chair of COP29.

The event, held on September 3, aimed to bolster global cooperation in climate transparency and foster trust among nations involved in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Attended by high-ranking officials from over 120 countries and international organizations, including ministers and deputy ministers from Türkiye, Uzbekistan, Japan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Brazil, Kyrgyzstan, and many others, the dialogue was a significant international gathering.

Notable attendees included the UNFCCC Executive Secretary, the Deputy Special Representative of the US President on Climate, and representatives from Australia, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, the UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the European Union.

Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-designate, opened the event by stressing the crucial role of global cooperation in addressing climate change. He highlighted the importance of Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs), which will be introduced this year, as vital tools for assessing climate action and fulfilling Paris Agreement obligations. Babayev emphasized that these reports will enhance global efforts against climate change and significantly contribute to international climate strategies.

The event also showcased the Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform (BTP), a key initiative of Azerbaijan's COP29 presidency. Chief Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev underscored that the platform's primary goal is to enhance global cooperation on climate transparency, build trust among countries, and support developing nations in preparing their BTRs. The BTP will also aid in universal participation by advancing the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement.

During the event, high-level officials underscored Azerbaijan's contributions to strengthening global climate efforts, increasing transparency, and fostering an environment of trust among nations.
