Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve has been chosen as one of the symbols of the official UNESCO calendar for 2024.

This heritage of Azerbaijan has become one of the 12 selected monuments of history and culture of the world for the calendar, the press service of Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve’s Administration told Caliber.Az.

Icherisheher was selected among 1,157 monuments from 168 countries of the world.

Icherisheher, also known as the Old City or Inner City, refers to the historical core of Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. This ancient walled city is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Baku, with a history dating back to at least the 12th century. It has witnessed centuries of cultural, economic, and political developments.

The area boasts a mix of architectural styles, reflecting influences from various periods, including the medieval, Shirvani, and Ottoman periods. Notable structures include the Maiden Tower (Qız Qalası) and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.

Icherisheher is also known for its labyrinthine streets, which are lined with shops, bazaars, and traditional Azerbaijani architecture. The area offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Azerbaijan. While Icherisheher is a historical gem, it is not a museum but a living part of the city. People still reside within its walls, and it is home to various shops, restaurants, and cultural events.
