Bloomberg: Türkiye proposes law to combat foreign influence
Türkiye is poised to introduce new legislation aimed at countering foreign influence on matters deemed detrimental to national interests, a move that has raised alarms among civil society and media groups who fear it may be employed to stifle dissent.
The proposed law is set to be debated in the Turkish Parliament in the coming days and seeks to penalise those deemed to be acting against “the state’s security or its domestic or external political interests” under the sway of a foreign country or organisation, Caliber.Az reports per Bloomberg.
According to a draft bill violators could face sentences of up to seven years in prison.
This initiative is part of a larger judicial reform package suggested by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
