COP29 spotlight: SOCAR-UNIPER launches major energy efficiency project
SOCAR-UNIPER, the joint venture between Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company (SOCAR) and Germany’s Uniper, is set to debut a new turbine-generator unit at the Ethylene-Polyethylene Plant of Azerkimya Production Association in November 2024, coinciding with COP29.
Rashad Huseynli, head of Uniper’s Azerbaijani office, announced the project at the Caspian Energy Forum, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“This significant SOCAR-Uniper initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency for Azerkimya. The project is nearing completion, and we will officially launch the turbine-generator unit for electricity and steam production during COP29,” Huseynli stated.
The unit's construction is designed to boost the efficiency and production capacity of the steam generator complex, which supplies power to the plant.
Huseynli highlighted the longstanding successful collaboration between SOCAR and Uniper in various areas, including natural gas supply from the Shah Deniz field, technological exchanges, emission reductions, and energy efficiency improvements.
SOCAR and Uniper established the SOCAR-UNIPER joint venture in 2016 for this project, which aims to increase the steam-generating complex's design capacity from 32 MWp to 65 MWp. The project involves installing an additional turbogenerator and modernizing the existing process system.
