Baku, Tehran talk over final stages of Astara Terminal construction Photo
Representatives from Azerbaijan and Iran have held talks on the progress of construction at the Astara terminal, a key infrastructure project along the International North–South Transport Corridor.
According to Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, the discussions took place during a visit by the company’s Chairman, Rovshan Rustamov, to Iran, where he met with Jabbar Ali Zakeri, head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, at the terminal site in Astara, Caliber.Az reports.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed key development milestones, construction timelines, and the potential for completing all works by the end of the year.
Officials noted that substantial progress has already been made at the site, which is considered a vital link in the North–South corridor. Project planning is now 90% complete, while construction and installation work has reached approximately 75%.
A strategic cooperation agreement signed earlier this year between Azerbaijan Railways and Iran’s railway authority is expected to provide further momentum towards the timely completion of the terminal.
Once operational, the Astara terminal is set to boost freight volumes and improve the efficiency of logistics operations across the region.
Construction of the terminal began in 2017, following an intergovernmental agreement. The land on which Azerbaijan is carrying out the works has been leased from Iran for a period of 25 years.
