Earthquake with 5.9 magnitude jolts eastern Türkiye 190 injured
On October 16, an earthquake measuring 5.9 struck the Turkish province of Malatya, resulting in injuries to 187 individuals of varying severity, said Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya at a press conference dedicated to the natural disaster.
Yerlikaya reported that three buildings experienced partial collapses and confirmed that 43 of the injured are currently under medical observation, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
In addition, 94 people sustained injuries in Elazığ, located in southeastern Türkiye, where two buildings sustained significant damage.
Elazığ Governor Numan Hatipoğlu provided this update, noting that the earthquake, which occurred in the Kale district of Malatya in the morning, was felt in surrounding areas as well.
Notably, Malatya was one of the 11 provinces devastated by a powerful earthquake that struck parts of Türkiye and northern Syria in 2023.
As a result, more than 53,000 people were killed and over 3 million were left without housing.
