Egypt raises alarm over Middle East tensions following Israeli strike on Iran

26 October 2024 18:30

Egyptian authorities have expressed concern that the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, particularly following an Israeli airstrike on Iranian territory, could intentionally or accidentally trigger a large-scale confrontation in the region.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting this concern, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Cairo is "greatly troubled by the escalating situation in the Middle East, including the repercussions of Israel's recent strike on Iran," the statement read. It condemned any actions that could exacerbate tensions, warning that the current level of unrest poses a significant risk of leading to a dangerous confrontation that threatens international peace and security.

The ministry reiterated the importance of adhering to international law and the UN Charter, which mandates that all parties respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also addressed the situation, urging Iran to refrain from retaliating against Israel. "Israel has the right to defend itself against Iranian aggression," he stated at a news conference. "We must avoid further regional escalation, and I call on all sides to show restraint. Iran must not respond."

Starmer noted that the situation is fluid and emphasized that the UK is closely monitoring developments with its partners.

In Israel, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the scale of the recent strike on Iran, arguing it was insufficient and failed to target the "strategic and economic goals" of the Islamic Republic. "The decision not to attack these targets was a mistake," Lapid asserted, adding that Iran, which he termed the "axis of evil," must face significant consequences for its aggression.

Despite his criticism, Lapid praised the effectiveness of the Israeli Air Force, expressing confidence that Israel's enemies are aware of the IDF's strength and capability to strike effectively anywhere.

The Israeli airstrike on October 26 targeted various installations in Iran, including surface-to-air missile systems and air defence facilities, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The operation involved over 100 aircraft operating from a distance of 2,000 kilometres.
