Envoy: Azerbaijan sees strong potential for cooperation with Turkmenistan
Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are expanding ties in trade, energy, and logistics, according to Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Turkmenistan, Gismat Gozalov.
In an article published in Foreign Policy and Diplomacy of Turkmenistan, Gozalov highlighted that transit shipments between the two countries reached 1.28 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2025, marking a 13% increase compared with the same period last year, Caliber.Az reports.
Around 76% of these shipments are transported by rail along the East–West route.
The ambassador noted that both countries are committed to addressing climate change despite their significant oil and gas reserves.
Discussions are ongoing regarding the export of Turkmen electricity to Europe via Azerbaijan, as well as Turkmenistan’s potential participation in a green energy transmission project signed between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan at COP29. The initiative also includes the Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor.
Gozalov pointed to the development of logistics infrastructure as another area of potential growth. “The Baku–Turkmenbashi international sea route forms a key link in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, or Middle Corridor. The Lapis-Lazuli Corridor, connecting Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, also intersects this route, linking to the TRACECA corridor and providing access to Mediterranean ports. This alignment supports the strategic transit and logistics policies of Ashgabat and Baku,” he wrote.
