EU agrees on key principles for stability, sovereignty in Syria
The European Union is set to unveil an updated strategy regarding the situation in Syria in the near future, said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
During a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg Kallas stated that EU member states have agreed on the key components of the strategy to ensure "stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity for Syria," Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
"Yesterday, the foreign ministers of EU countries reaffirmed these principles and endorsed the proposal to swiftly develop new approaches to Syria," she said.
The EU, Kallas added, has begun preparations for a "Conference on Syria's Future," which will take place in Brussels.
At the end of November, armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against Syrian army positions. On December 8, they entered Damascus, prompting government forces to withdraw from the city.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad vacated his post and left the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who has led the so-called Salvation Government formed by the opposition in Idlib Province since January 2024, announced his appointment as the head of Syria's transitional government. This government will remain in place until March 1, 2025.
