EU spends more on Russian gas than on aid to Ukraine
The European Union spends twice as much on Russian gas as it does on aid to Ukraine.
Despite all efforts to reduce dependence on Russian gas, it still accounts for 15 per cent of the EU's total gas imports, surpassing LNG supplies from the US, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
"Europe is currently spending twice as much on Russian energy as it is providing to Ukraine in aid," the message says.
The European Union (EU) and our 27 Member States remain united and determined in unprecedented support for Ukraine. Since the start of the war, the EU and EU Member States have made available over $121 billion in financial, military, humanitarian, and refugee assistance. In addition, in February 2024, European leaders agreed to commit up to $54 billion until 2027 for a new Ukraine Facility to support Ukraine's recovery, reconstruction and modernization, as well as its efforts to carry out reforms as part of its accession path to the EU.
This will bring commitments to date to over $162 billion. Some $13.1 billion was already disbursed under the Ukraine Facility and an additional $1.5 billion in grants and guarantees was signed to support recovery and attract investments. Furthermore, in July 2024, the EU made available the first $1.6 billion generated from immobilized Russian assets, which will be channeled through the European Peace Facility and to the Ukraine Facility to support Ukraine's military capabilities as well as to support the country's reconstruction.
