FM: Türkiye to continue making efforts for peace in Ukraine

10 January 2025 14:36

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that Türkiye supports the decisive actions of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the pursuit of peace in the region.

He emphasised at the briefing for local and international journalists that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also taken steps toward this goal, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

"There are a few remaining points to finalise for the signing of a peace agreement. We hope that in 2025, a lasting peace will be achieved, and we will witness a prosperous region," he added.

Moreover, Fidan noted that Türkiye will continue making efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and support all initiatives aimed at achieving this goal.

"We remain steadfast in supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We have drawn and will continue drawing attention to the importance of creating space for diplomacy," Fidan said.

He highlighted that the grain deal signed in July 2022 had allowed Türkiye to make a significant contribution to global food security.

"We continue our diplomatic initiatives to reach a new agreement between Russia and Ukraine and ensure the safety of shipping in the Black Sea. Moving forward, we will continue supporting efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine," the Turkish foreign minister stated.

Türkiye is continuing its efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022. Ankara has urged Kyiv and Moscow to end the fighting through negotiations, with Türkiye ready for any initiative, including mediation, to lay the groundwork for peace. Türkiye first hosted a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers in the Mediterranean city of Antalya in March 2022. Those efforts led to the landmark Black Sea grain deal in 2022, but Moscow did not extend the agreement after July 2023, citing restrictions on Russian grain exports.
