Fourteen Turkish citizens from Sumud flotilla to return via Jordan, official says
Fourteen Turkish citizens who were detained by Israeli authorities on the Global Sumud Flotilla have safely crossed into Jordan and are on their way back to Türkiye, Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli said.
In a post on X, Keçeli announced that the citizens will return to Türkiye by air from Amman, Caliber.Az reports.
The return of these citizens marks the conclusion of Türkiye’s repatriation efforts following the seizure of the flotilla by Israeli forces last week.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is a humanitarian mission aimed at breaking Israel’s blockade of Gaza. It was organised by civil society groups from over 44 countries and included more than 40 vessels carrying approximately 500 participants. Among the passengers was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
The flotilla's goal was to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and establish a people-led humanitarian corridor. However, on October 1 and 2, the Israeli Navy intercepted all participating vessels in international waters, detaining the activists onboard.
