Georgia highlights BTK railway impact on Europe–Asia freight flow
The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway has strategic importance for the entire region and opens additional opportunities for cargo transportation between Europe and Asia, Tamar Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, said.
Speaking at the official launch ceremony of the BTK railway, she noted that the line is a key transport corridor linking Europe and Asia and represents a joint strategic project of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye, according to local media.
“A new railway line is being added to our transport network. This is a joint strategic project of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye, which connects Europe with Asia and provides us with additional opportunities for cargo transportation,” Ioseliani said.
She added that since 2017 the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway had been operating in a test mode, during which freight volumes along the route steadily increased.
“We are confident that through joint efforts we will be able to ensure the full operation of this railway. Extensive restoration and reconstruction works have been carried out on the Marabda–Kartsakhi section,” she emphasised.
