Georgia inaugurates bypass section of road to Azerbaijan, improving traffic flow
The construction of a crucial section of the Bakurtsikhe-Tsnori main road, which links Tbilisi to the Azerbaijan border, has been completed.
The road's opening ceremony was broadcast by local TV channels, marking a significant milestone in regional infrastructure development, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azerbaijani media.
At the ceremony, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the road's importance, stating, "After the opening of this road, motor vehicles will no longer need to travel through the densely populated Tsnori and six adjacent villages, ensuring the unloading of these settlements. The new road will significantly improve traffic and safety standards, triple the traveling time, and increase the capacity of transport by 2.5 times."
Georgian Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze highlighted that the newly constructed 18-kilometer road is a segment of the international highway connecting Tbilisi, Bakurtsikhe, Lagodekhi, and Azerbaijan. Previously, the transit route passed through small villages, which the new road bypasses, easing congestion and improving travel efficiency.
The project, which began in 2022, includes a two-lane motorway and six bridges, enhancing both local and international connectivity. Supported by the Asian Development Bank, the construction of this road section cost approximately $33 million.
