Georgia security forces detain Tbilisi City Council member
The Georgian State Security Service has detained a deputy of Tbilisi City Council (Sakrebulo), Zviad Kuprava, from the United National Movement party.
The case concerns social media videos calling for the overthrow of the government and disruption of the upcoming October 4 elections, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
Zviad Kuprava is a prominent Georgian opposition activist, politician, and human rights advocate, known for his vocal criticism of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party and his involvement in pro-Western protests and reforms. As a member of the United National Movement (UNM)—the main opposition party founded by former President Mikheil Saakashvili—he serves on the Sakrebulo.
Kuprava has faced repeated legal challenges, physical assaults, and arrests, which he and his supporters attribute to political persecution amid Georgia's deepening political crisis. His activism centres on law enforcement reform, anti-corruption, and defending democratic freedoms, particularly in the lead-up to the disputed October 2024 parliamentary elections and the upcoming October 4, 2025, local elections.
