Georgian FM says Armenia–Azerbaijan peace unlocks regional progress
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili said that the peace established between Armenia and Azerbaijan will help drive development across the region.
She made the remarks at a joint press conference after her meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, noting that relations between Georgia and Armenia are rooted in a long history of mutual respect and close ties between their peoples, and that the strategic partnership established in 2024 was a natural continuation of these relations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
Bochorishvili also welcomed the August 8 peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, signed in Washington.
“This historic agreement is a step towards establishing sustainable peace in the South Caucasus. Georgia has faithfully played an important role in the development of the region, in its stable and peaceful development. It will continue to contribute to strengthening regional cooperation,” she said.
Botchorishvili added she hoped that this cooperation would continue and deliver significant results for all three countries and for the region as a whole.
For his part, Armenia’s foreign minister thanked his Georgian counterpart for deepening the strategic cooperation between Armenia and Georgia and for advancing this process.
He stated that every country in the South Caucasus, as well as the region as a whole — a region with great potential — should remain connected to one another and strengthen ties with other regions.
Mirzoyan stated that they believed the peace established between Armenia and Azerbaijan with the participation of the President of the United States would contribute to the region’s development, adding that the region could truly transform into a crossroads.
On August 8 in Washington, a trilateral summit hosted by U.S. President Donald J. Trump laid the groundwork for the ongoing peace efforts between Baku and Yerevan.
The summit — the first such meeting since the collapse of the Soviet Union — brought together Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Trump for high-level talks focused on normalising relations and advancing regional cooperation.
During the meeting, the sides signed a joint declaration outlining a framework for peace based on sovereignty, territorial integrity and the renunciation of the use of force.
The foreign ministers of both countries also initialled a draft peace accord titled “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia,” marking a significant step forward in resolving the decades-long conflict between the two nations.
