German Foreign Ministry calls for intensified climate action following Baku Appeal

15 November 2024 12:14

The German Foreign Ministry has highlighted the potential of the Baku Appeal to unite efforts aimed at tackling the consequences of climate change.

Jennifer Morgan, State Secretary and Special Representative for International Climate Action at Germany's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the statement during a high-level ministerial panel discussion titled "Climate and Peace: Creating Conditions for Collective Action that Leaves No One Behind" at COP29, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Morgan emphasised that the Baku Appeal could inspire a new approach to climate action, fostering partnerships with governments, communities in conflict-affected regions, local actors, and relevant UN institutions.

The goal, she noted, would be to collaboratively design programmes tailored to shared views on climate resilience, taking into account the unique conditions of each region.

These efforts would also focus on developing investment projects aimed at enhancing resilience, demonstrating what is needed for a sustainable, climate-resilient, and conflict-sensitive development model.

The proposed projects are designed to illustrate the critical need for joint, sustainable solutions that address both climate change and regional conflicts.

Note that, COP29, being held from November 11 to 22 at Baku Stadium, marks Azerbaijan’s largest and most significant event to date and is the first time the country has hosted a COP summit. The event witnessed the signing of a Host Country Agreement and other crucial documents between the Azerbaijani government and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat.

A key focus of COP29 is the establishment of a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) for climate finance. The presidency of COP29 has introduced 14 initiatives that connect climate action to the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, energy storage, climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction from organic waste, green digital technologies, and more.

One of the proposed initiatives is the creation of a Climate Finance Action Fund aimed at achieving the critical target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
