Germany hopes for Azerbaijan's inclusive chairmanship of COP29 climate conference
Jennifer Morgan, State Secretary and Special Representative for International Climate Policy at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, has expressed optimism about Azerbaijan’s leadership role in the upcoming COP29 climate conference.
She called for inclusive cooperation with activists, NGOs, scientists, and businesses.
Speaking to reporters in Luxembourg, Morgan highlighted that the Pre-COP29 conference, held last week in Baku, was productive and demonstrated active engagement from many nations in addressing climate change, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“We still have a long way to go, and the European Union will play an active role in ensuring the success of the COP conference,” Morgan stated.
She noted that the main objective of the current meeting of EU climate ministers in Luxembourg is to discuss preparations for COP29 in Baku.
Morgan emphasized the need to address the global impacts of climate change, citing recent floods in Eastern Europe, hurricanes in the US, and the effects felt in Nepal and Africa.
She also stressed the urgency of transitioning to a green economy and the importance of ensuring that countries follow through on energy transition agreements made last year.
“We want to make significant progress at COP29 in advancing these goals,” she added, reiterating the EU’s commitment to supporting Azerbaijan’s leadership during the conference.
