Germany urges more engagement in Azerbaijan’s green energy projects

13 May 2025 17:44

Azerbaijan’s increasing importance in Europe’s transition to green energy was emphasised by Germany’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Ralf Horlemann, during a meeting of the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Foreign Trade (AHK Azerbaijan).

“Strengthening the economic ties between our countries is of utmost importance. In this context, it is particularly significant to highlight Azerbaijan’s growing role in Europe’s energy transformation towards a ‘green economy,’” said Ambassador Horlemann, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

He further called on German companies to become more actively involved in this expanding partnership. "I urge German companies to engage more actively in the development of this cooperation," he added.

The event also saw the announcement that the Chamber’s membership had grown by 21 new companies, bringing the total number of members to 194.

Nargis Wieck, Executive Director of AHK Azerbaijan, also spoke about the Chamber’s commitment to fostering bilateral projects and strategic partnerships. “We are dedicated to advancing projects and partnerships that contribute to economic growth in both Azerbaijan and Germany,” she said.

According to Azerbaijan’s energy plans, the country is set to build eight industrial-scale solar and wind power plants by 2027, with a total installed capacity of approximately 2 GW. These projects, estimated at $2.8 billion, will be funded through both foreign and domestic investments.

The completion of these projects will enable Azerbaijan to generate approximately 5.3 billion kWh of green energy annually. Additionally, it will raise the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy system to 32.6%, save around 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas per year, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million tons.

Looking ahead, Azerbaijan has set a goal to increase its renewable energy capacity to 7 GW by 2030, with plans to export 5 GW of that capacity.
