Global media on Türkiye’s plans to build super aircraft carrier PHOTO

08 July 2025 19:50

Global media are closely following the project of a 300-meter aircraft carrier that Türkiye plans to build in partnership with Spain.

According to Türkiye Gazetesi, military officials confirm this gigantic project, being implemented jointly with the Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia, which will change the balance of power in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

In a report by Infodefensa, the statements made by the head of the defence industry, Haluk Görgün, took centre stage. According to him, the original plan was for the aircraft carrier to be 285 meters long, but in the new project, its length was increased to 300 meters.

“We are increasing the length of the ship to 300 meters,” he said.

The new aircraft carrier will be significantly larger than the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which has a displacement of 42,000 tons and a length of 261 meters, and it is also expected to be longer than the British Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth-class ships, which weigh about 65,000 tons and have a length of about 280 meters.

With this project, Türkiye aims to increase its carrier capacity to a level close to the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. For example, the USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest U.S. ship, has a length of 337 meters and a displacement of 75,000 tons.

International military publications such as Army Recognition and Militarni have covered Türkiye’s plan to build a super aircraft carrier together with Spain.

The new aircraft carrier will strengthen Türkiye’s strategic positions in the Mediterranean and Black Seas and demonstrate its goal of securing energy routes by enhancing deterrence in disputed waters.

With this project, Türkiye seeks to go beyond its naval doctrine based on coastal defence and enter a new era based on continuous power projection.

The new platform is designed as a floating base for aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and command and control systems. The aircraft carrier will be equipped with a catapult launch system and arresting gear, meeting the most advanced standards. This will significantly increase the capabilities of Türkiye’s naval aviation.
