Google honours Azerbaijan’s Day of Restoration of State Independence with special doodle

The leading global internet search engine, Google, has unveiled a special doodle to commemorate Azerbaijan's Day of Restoration of State Independence, celebrated on October 18.

By clicking on the image of the Azerbaijani flag on the search engine's homepage will direct users to information regarding the history of this significant holiday, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the 33rd anniversary of the restoration of its independence. Until 2021, October 18 was observed as State Independence Day. However, in anticipation of the 30th anniversary, the Milli Majlis (Parliament) renamed the day the Day of Restoration of State Independence and moved the celebration to May 28, which is now recognised as Independence Day.

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which was recognized as the first democratic state in the Muslim East, was established on May 28, 1918, by the National Council under the leadership of Mahammad Amin Rasulzade.

The brutal Soviet Army massacre in Baku on January 20, 1990, significantly eroded public trust in the USSR, propelling the nation towards independence. 

On that date in 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the "Constitutional Act on State Independence," declaring the USSR an occupier and affirming Azerbaijan's status as the legal successor to the 1918 republic. A subsequent referendum on December 29, 1991, overwhelmingly supported independence.
