Azerbaijani Speaker, Georgian president discuss deepening partnership
President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili met with Speaker of the Parliament of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova, to discuss enhancing the partnership between the countries.
Kavelashvili shared the news on his Facebook page, Caliber.Az reports.
“We discussed the historically strong friendship between our countries, as well as the main directions of the strategic partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan. During the meeting, we emphasized the fruitful cooperation between our parliaments and discussed prospects for further deepening this partnership,” he wrote.
Let’s note that Kavelashvili has chosen Azerbaijan for his first official foreign visit since his election as president, underscoring the strategic partnership and close ties between the two neighboring countries.
On April 15, President Kavelashvili arrived in Baku on an official visit. At the airport, he was welcomed by First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov, Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev, and other officials.
On December 14, 2024, Kavelashvili, a former footballer and member of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was elected president by a 300-member electoral college. He received 224 out of 225 valid votes, with one ballot invalidated. Notably, he was the sole candidate, nominated by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the party's founder and influential figure.
