How Armenia resists advancing regional connectivity Pashinyan’s ploy
Armenia has consistently refused to compromise its sovereignty when it comes to utilizing communication routes on its territory.
This assertion was made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during an expanded session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Pashinyan declared that Armenia is entirely prepared to guarantee the safety of goods, vehicles, and individuals as part of the “Crossroads of Peace” initiative.
He emphasized that any claims suggesting Armenia has agreed to the involvement of third countries in securing communications on its territory are fabrications.
“I would like to clarify that any assertions implying Armenia has ever consented to limit its sovereignty regarding regional communications are completely false. Such an agreement has never existed, and it is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. Armenia is committed to ensuring the safety of goods, vehicles, and individuals on its land, and we provide this assurance,” Pashinyan stated.
It should be noted that for more than three years, Armenia has been obstructing the initiation of the Zangezur corridor, designed to connect mainland Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan.
This obstruction constitutes a violation of the Trilateral Statement from November 10, 2020, which specifies in paragraph 9 that “the Republic of Armenia guarantees the security of transport communication between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to facilitate the unobstructed movement of citizens, vehicles, and goods in both directions. Control over the transport communication shall be managed by the Border Service of the Federal Security Service of Russia.”
