In a poignant tribute marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War, religious leaders of different faiths joined dignitaries and citizens in Baku to honour the memory of fallen soldiers.
On the eve of Victory Day celebrations, a commemorative ceremony took place at the Memorial to Second World War Soldiers in Baku’s Narimanov district, Caliber.Az reports.
The event was attended by war veterans, their relatives, schoolchildren, members of civil society, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.
The Ambassador of Tajikistan to Azerbaijan, Ilkhom Abdurakhmon, and Colonel J. Khalilov, Deputy Chairman of the War and Labour Veterans Organisation, delivered addresses, paying tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives during the war.
In a powerful symbol of interfaith unity, Bishop Alexiy of Baku and Azerbaijan led a requiem service for those who had laid down their lives on the battlefield, succumbed to wounds and hunger, or perished in captivity and forced labour. His prayer remembered all who contributed to the Allied victory.
A representative of the Caucasus Muslim Board also recited a funeral prayer, further reflecting Azerbaijan’s commitment to religious coexistence and respect for shared national memory.
The ceremony concluded with participants laying wreaths and flowers at the graves of soldiers who died of their wounds in Baku hospitals during the war.
