Iran says Israeli plot to assassinate Araghchi in Tehran foiled by intelligence
Mohammad Hossein Ranjbaran, Adviser to the Iranian Foreign Minister, claimed that an Israeli attempt to assassinate Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in Tehran was recently thwarted by Iranian intelligence.
Ranjbaran made the assertion in a post on X, saying he had received “numerous messages” from concerned citizens after it was announced that Araghchi would travel to Geneva for talks with the European troika, Caliber.Az reports.
“There has certainly been and still is a threat,” Ranjbaran wrote, suggesting that Israeli operatives had planned to target the minister shortly before his departure.
“If it weren't for the security measures of our anonymous soldiers, a major Israeli conspiracy in Tehran might have been carried out days ago,” he added.
Ranjbaran described Araghchi as someone who considers himself a “soldier of the homeland” rather than merely a diplomat, drawing comparisons to the late Qassem Soleimani, the high-ranking military commander killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2020. He added that Araghchi, like Soleimani, is “in search of martyrdom.”
Calling on Iranians to pray for the country’s diplomats, Ranjbaran expressed hope they would succeed in securing “the rights of the Islamic Republic” in a world that, he said, has “drifted far from humanity.”
The Iranian government has not officially commented on the alleged plot. Israeli officials have also made no public statement regarding the claims.
