Iran steers clear of Hamas-Israel ceasefire talks amid Gaza conflict
Iran has firmly stated that it is not involved in, nor does it intend to participate in, the ongoing negotiations between the Palestinian group Hamas and Israel concerning a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages held in the enclave.
This declaration was made by Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The statement emphasized, "We did not participate in the indirect talks between Hamas and the [Israeli] regime mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the US and did not intend to participate in such negotiations." This stance underscores Iran's decision to distance itself from the ceasefire discussions, which international mediators have facilitated.
Earlier reports suggested that Iran was considering a more active role in the talks. Sources hinted that for the first time since the recent escalation in Gaza, Iran might send a representative to participate in the ceasefire negotiations. The idea was that this representative could engage in behind-the-scenes discussions, particularly to maintain diplomatic communications with the United States during the sensitive negotiations.
However, with Iran’s latest statement, it is evident that Tehran has chosen to refrain from direct involvement in these talks, despite the speculation.
