Iranian leader embarks on landmark visit to Iraq
Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian has arrived in Iraq for his inaugural official foreign trip since assuming office.
The visit commenced on September 11, with Pezeshkian landing in Baghdad where he was warmly welcomed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
Over the course of his three-day visit, President Pezeshkian will engage in discussions with high-level Iraqi officials and is anticipated to sign several agreements, including those related to security cooperation. His itinerary includes visits to significant Shiite holy sites in Karbala and Najaf, as well as to the cities of Basra and Erbil.
Previously, Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Mohammad Kazem Al Sadeq indicated that these agreements were intended to be finalized during the visit of the late President Ebrahim Raisi.
Pezeshkian, who was elected as Iran’s president in the second round of voting on July 5, undertakes this trip following the tragic death of Raisi in a plane crash on May 19.
