Istanbul population exceeds 15 million

The population of Istanbul has surpassed 15 million people.

Sabah newspaper reports citing published statistics that according to the results of the last census, the population of Türkiye exceeded 84 million people.

"The most notable city turned out to be Istanbul. The population of Istanbul exceeded 15 million people. At the same time, more than 13 million citizens living in Istanbul are registered in various provinces of the country," the publication said.

According to the newspaper, only 2,164,766 people living in Istanbul are officially registered as residents of the metropolis.

The statistics note that those registered in the provinces of Giresun (over 494,000), Erzurum (over 442,000), Erzincan (over 307,000), and Kars (over 303,000) live in Istanbul the most.
