Kazakhstan, Estonia deepen strategic ties during high-level talks in Astana
Kazakhstan and Estonia reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation during high-level talks in Astana, where President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev hosted Estonian President Alar Karis on a state visit. The sides highlighted the strategic importance of their partnership, discussed obstacles in trade, and outlined new avenues for collaboration amid an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.
During the meeting, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored the importance of Estonia as a strategic partner for Kazakhstan, emphasizing the strong foundation of mutual respect between the two nations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kazakh president’s office.
“We consider Estonia one of our key strategic partners and hold great respect for the history, traditions, and culture of the Estonian people. I am very pleased that our relations are developing steadily. We have no major issues or obstacles. At the same time, the potential for our mutual cooperation is very high, and it must be implemented,” Tokayev stated.
He expressed confidence that President Karis’ visit would provide “a strong momentum” to bilateral cooperation and friendship. Tokayev also noted challenges in mutual trade, though he acknowledged progress in the sector. Kazakhstan, he said, is particularly interested in gaining access to Estonia’s seaports, enhancing trade, and maintaining constructive engagement in international organizations, including the United Nations and the UN Security Council.
President Karis, in turn, praised the current state of bilateral relations, noting that existing challenges were manageable.
“Of course, certain obstacles exist, but they can be overcome. Sometimes we do not even realize that it is not so difficult. Our entrepreneurs are already actively discussing joint projects. Several meetings are planned, and we expect to sign a number of memorandums of understanding and implement many initiatives,” he said.
Karis expressed optimism about the future of the partnership, while acknowledging the instability of the current geopolitical landscape. He stressed the need for joint efforts to overcome emerging challenges and highlighted the importance of reform within the United Nations to reduce global conflicts.
A ceremonial welcome for the Estonian president was held at the presidential residence on November 17. High-level negotiations are scheduled to continue, with both sides set to discuss new prospects for strengthening bilateral cooperation.
