Kremlin spokesperson: Putin not seeking to revive Soviet Union
The Kremlin has dismissed claims that President Vladimir Putin aims to restore the Soviet Union, calling such suggestions geopolitically impossible.
Speaking to journalists, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was responding to remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who linked Russia’s growing militarisation to an alleged desire by Putin to revive the former Soviet state, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Peskov said the claims were “not true” and stressed that Putin had repeatedly stated he had no intention of re-establishing the USSR.
“President Putin does not want to restore the Soviet Union because it is impossible. He has spoken about this many times. Suggesting otherwise shows a lack of respect for our partners and allies in the CIS and other integration frameworks,” Peskov added.
He also suggested that Chancellor Merz may not be aware of these facts.
