Moscow commends Türkiye’s role in upholding Montreux Convention
Russia’s embassy in Türkiye said Moscow values Ankara’s balanced approach to implementing the 1936 Montreux Convention, emphasising its importance amid rising regional tensions.
“Russia attaches great importance to the 1936 Montreux Convention and firmly advocates for its implementation by all participants in international relations. In this regard, we value Türkiye’s balanced and responsible position,” the embassy said in a statement on social media, according to TASS.
The diplomatic mission stressed that the convention serves the interests of all states, particularly “in the current dramatic period”, given recent developments in the Mediterranean Sea and the broader Middle East.
Türkiye has repeatedly affirmed its strict adherence to the Montreux Convention. Citing Article 19, Ankara closed the Turkish Straits to warships belonging to countries involved in the conflict, as well as to non-littoral states, following the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. The move was aimed at preventing further escalation in the Black Sea region.
