Lavrov calls Azerbaijan-Russia relations "exceptionally trusting," promises further growth

14 January 2025 16:14

Russia highly values Azerbaijan's support in the investigation of the AZAL plane crash in Aktau, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The minister said Azerbaijan's immediate backing of Russia’s involvement speaks to the strong bilateral ties between the two nations.

"Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia are built on a foundation of trust and structure, allowing us to resolve any matters efficiently by examining all facts. We truly appreciate that Azerbaijan’s leaders acted swiftly to support Russia’s participation in the investigation, taking all relevant factors into account," Lavrov explained in response to a local media correspondent, per Caliber.Az.

Further deepening the diplomatic ties, Lavrov noted that Russia and Azerbaijan are maintaining constant communication, with the Russian side staying in close contact with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.

Focus on the Caspian Sea challenges

Another key topic of discussion between the two nations is the issue of the Caspian Sea's shallowing.

According to the minister, Russia and Azerbaijan are setting up a bilateral working group to address the environmental challenge, with plans to expand the initiative into a five-party format, inviting all coastal states to participate.

"We are currently creating a bilateral working group and have plans to broaden it to a five-party format, involving all the Caspian countries. We are also collaborating on international platforms," Lavrov stated.

He underscored the ongoing collaboration between Baku and Moscow in various fields, including security and the fight against terrorism and organized crime, as well as strengthening ties between their armed forces and intelligence agencies.

Building long-term strategic cooperation

Lavrov also praised the "exceptionally trusting" relationship between Azerbaijan and Russia. "I value our relationship greatly. The two presidents maintain regular communication, and there are no topics off the table. Presidents Putin and Aliyev are working together to encourage new mutually beneficial projects. This includes initiatives like the North-South transport corridor and other regional projects, as well as addressing the Caspian’s environmental issues," he said.

Looking ahead, Lavrov highlighted that the two countries have developed a long-term strategy for consultations on foreign policy. "This includes discussions at the UN, OSCE, and on critical global topics such as climate change. Notably, Baku hosted the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which highlights the importance of our ongoing collaboration. Our relationship is thriving and remains based on trust. As I mentioned, we anticipate even greater progress in 2025," Lavrov concluded.
