Media: Ghalibaf emerges as key figure in Iran-US talks
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has emerged as a central figure in recent Iran-US negotiations, with American officials viewing him as a pragmatic and potentially influential player in Iran’s future political landscape, according to sources cited in a The Washington Post opinion column.
Talks held in Islamabad began with a firm tone, as US Vice President JD Vance and Ghalibaf set out their respective positions. However, after extended discussions, Iranian officials — particularly Ghalibaf — made a notable impression on the American delegation.
According to the opinion piece, Ghalibaf was seen as a “refined and professional bargainer,” with some in Washington considering him a possible leader in a future iteration of Iran’s political system. Sources also suggested that figures within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps may be establishing parallel communication channels, seeking to position themselves for influence in any potential transition.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump is intensifying economic pressure on Iran, favouring sanctions and financial measures over direct military escalation.
"Trump is said to have recognized that a ground attack or other military escalation might lead the U.S. into a quagmire. It has dawned on the White House, as critics have been warning, that wars in the Middle East are easy to start but hard to stop," the piece notes.
