Moscow threatens “Ukrainian land” seizure to recoup frozen Russian assets
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, declared that Russia intends to reclaim its frozen assets held in the West—recently transferred to Ukraine—“in kind,” explicitly referring to the seizure of Ukrainian territory as compensation.
Medvedev’s remarks came in response to the United Kingdom’s recent decision to hand over $1.3 billion in profits derived from Russian assets to Kyiv, Caliber.Az reports.
“Our country has only one way to recover its valuables. To return what was seized in kind. That is, with ‘Ukrainian land’ and other immovable and movable property located there,” Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel, underscoring a hardline approach toward asset recovery.
Medvedev also issued a pointed warning to the UK, suggesting that London could face repercussions for its role in transferring Russian asset revenues. He referenced “the values of the British Crown,” implying potential retaliatory measures against British interests.
He elaborated: “Any unlawful seizure of frozen Russian funds or the income derived from them must be converted into additional territories and other property of country 404 [Ukraine]. Or else, the confiscation of the British Crown’s assets.” Medvedev further noted that significant British assets remain scattered globally, including within Russia itself.
