Moscow urges Europe "not to rush to blame Russia" over drone incidents

06 October 2025 14:43

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed as “baseless and indiscriminate” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s claim that Russia may be behind recent drone incidents over Germany.

He described the situation with drones in Europe as “strange,” but urged European countries “not to rush to blame Russia and instead broaden their horizons,” Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

During a press briefing in Moscow, Peskov also addressed other key international issues, including allegations of Chinese intelligence support to Russia and the future of the New START arms reduction treaty.

According to Kommersant, Peskov said the Kremlin welcomes U.S. President Donald Trump’s remark describing President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to extend the New START treaty for another year as “a good idea.”

Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, had dismissed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s suggestion that Russia may be behind recent drone incidents over Germany.

Speaking to the press, Zakharova took a sarcastic tone, implying that Berlin’s investigations would take an exceptionally long time.

“Germany has still not figured out the ‘flows’—the Nord Stream pipeline explosions. They still do not know who carried them out. As for the drones, they will probably get around to it in the next century,” she said.

Earlier, Chancellor Merz stated that Russia is likely behind many of the drones spotted over Germany.

“We assume that Russia is behind most of these drone flights,” Deutsche Welle quotes Merz as saying.
