Moscow urges restraint on Iran, watches US moves on Cuba

26 January 2026 13:01

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has expressed Moscow’s concern over reports of a possible U.S. blockade of Cuba, while reaffirming Russia’s close ties with Venezuela and calling for restraint around Iran.

Speaking to reporters, Peskov said Moscow is closely following media reports about potential U.S. actions against Cuba, describing the information as "alarming," Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

He stressed that Cuba firmly defends its sovereignty and independence, adding that Russia highly values its bilateral relations with the island nation.

Commenting on Venezuela, the Kremlin spokesman noted that Moscow remains in constant contact with Caracas through diplomatic channels. According to Peskov, the development of relations with Russia remains a priority for Venezuela, as evidenced by ongoing joint projects, investments, and continued mutually beneficial cooperation.

“We have our own bilateral relations, a number of projects in which we are interested in continuing, and our investments in Venezuela. And for Venezuela as well, judging by what we are told by Caracas, further development of mutually beneficial relations with Russia is one of the priority issues,” he added.

Turning to Iran, Peskov urged all sides to exercise restraint and focus on a peaceful resolution of tensions surrounding the Islamic Republic. He emphasised that Russia continues to make efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation.

Recent geopolitical developments have elevated tensions in the Western Hemisphere and the Middle East, directly affecting Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran.

Reports from Western media indicate that the U.S. administration is considering a naval blockade to cut off oil imports to Cuba. Although no final decision has been announced. This comes against the backdrop of a deepening economic and humanitarian crisis in Cuba, including fuel shortages and declining living conditions, which have been worsened by long-standing U.S. sanctions and the loss of energy support from Venezuela.

Tensions in Venezuela have spiked as the U.S. has stepped up military and economic actions in the region, including seizures of oil tankers linked to Venezuelan exports and broader enforcement measures in the Caribbean.

In recent weeks, U.S. President Donald Trump said that a U.S. naval “armada” is heading toward the Middle East — a move widely interpreted as a warning to Tehran amid ongoing clashes and internal instability. Trump’s comments have been framed as part of broader pressure on Iran over its internal crackdown on protests and concerns about its strategic programs.
