Peskov: Zangezur Corridor sovereign issue between Baku, Yerevan
The Kremlin has stated that the issue of the Zangezur Corridor remains a sovereign matter between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Speaking to reporters on July 24, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the situation surrounding the Zangezur Corridor is a sovereign matter between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Russia supports a swift peace between the two countries, Caliber.Az reports per TASS.
Peskov’s comments come in the wake of a high-level meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, held on July 10 in Abu Dhabi. The bilateral talks, which took place without international mediators, marked a significant step in direct negotiations aimed at normalising relations and finalising a peace treaty.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed key aspects of the peace process, including the ongoing delimitation of the 1,000-kilometre border and the establishment of the Zangezur Corridor — a proposed transport link connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave.
Both parties agreed to begin preparations for the initialling of a peace agreement, building on a draft framework outlined earlier this year. The talks were described as constructive, though several contentious issues remain unresolved.
Among the outstanding matters, Baku has called on Yerevan to amend its constitution to eliminate territorial claims and to formally disassociate from the OSCE Minsk Group — an international mediation format Azerbaijan considers obsolete.
