Pundit describes Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal as "trump card" for Harris

04 October 2024 09:38

Armenian political strategist and analyst Vigen Hakobyan has described the signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan as the most acceptable "trump card" for the Biden administration in the upcoming elections, as there are no significant achievements expected in other areas of foreign policy, such as the Russia-Ukraine or Israel-Palestine crises.

Washington is pushing for the signing of a framework peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku before the November elections. While the Armenian side has expressed its willingness to sign 13 out of 16 provisions, the Azerbaijani side has set conditions – namely, amendments to the Armenian Constitution and signing the agreement in full, he made the remarks in an interview with Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

"Right now, the US is in the biggest hurry because, for them, it's about PR. For the US, the signing ceremony itself, the visuals, as they say, could serve as another campaign argument for the Democratic Party candidate, Kamala Harris. The same goal is behind calls to sign at least the agreed-upon points, bypassing traditional legal procedures, such as removing the preamble through the Constitutional Court," the political analyst said.

As for Armenia's internal issues, Hakobyan sees the main problem in the parasitic attitude of a significant portion of Armenian citizens towards life, which also reflects on society as a whole. For many, it makes no difference whether they live in Armenia, some province, state, or even in Glendale, USA.

"A significant portion of the Armenian people does not value independence or statehood. Society is divided into supporters of Russia, the West, Iran, etc., and they all express the same thoughts: 'Who will support us?' 'Who will protect us?' 'Who will ensure our security?' 'Who will supply us with gas?'

On the one hand, the authorities claim that Russian soldiers should fight for Armenians, and now they are 'offended' and threaten to leave the security system (CSTO) and align with someone else. On the other hand, the Armenian opposition tries not to cross any 'red lines,' but they want 'someone' to bring them to power. In other words, we see similar approaches — the ruling team wants 'someone' to maintain their power, while the opposition doesn't want to get bogged down in political processes and fears 'getting involved in history,' yet they still want 'someone' to remove the current government and bring them to power," notes the political strategist.
