Putin criticises Nobel peace prize choices, notes Trump’s peace efforts
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated during a press conference in Tajikistan that it is not his place to determine whether US President Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, though he noted Trump’s active involvement in international peace efforts.
Putin expressed skepticism toward some of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee’s past decisions, claiming that the prestige of the award has been undermined by recipients who, in his view, had done little or nothing to promote peace, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“Whether the current US president deserves the Nobel Prize or not, I don’t know. But he is truly doing a lot to resolve complex crises that have dragged on for years, even decades,” the Kremlin leader added.
He pointed to instances where the prize was awarded to individuals whom he believed were undeserving, suggesting that such decisions had significantly harmed the reputation of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Although he refrained from giving a direct opinion on Trump’s eligibility for the prize, Putin acknowledged that the U.S. president was making considerable efforts to resolve long-standing international crises, including those that have persisted for decades. He specifically highlighted Trump’s active role in addressing the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and noted what he described as the president’s genuine commitment to achieving peace and stability in complex global regions, such as the Middle East.
The remarks came shortly after the Nobel Peace Prize Committee announced this year’s laureate: Maria Corina Machado, Venezuelan opposition leader, recognised for her efforts in advocating for democratic reform and human rights in her country.
